“Do we really need to spend time designing a good site structure? Can’t we just provide a good search function?”

Search is huge these days, and for good reason. If you know what you’re looking for, search engines like Google are very good at finding it. And we expect every site of even medium size to have a big friendly search box waiting for us.

But for most websites, a good search function is not enough.

Here’s why:

Users also need to be able to “see” the scope and shape of your site, and this is most easily done by seeing the grouping of content on your site – the headings and subheadings. We all do this now when we visit websites, but we’ve learned that some sites are clearly organized and some are, shall we say, somewhat less clear.
